United Nations Mission in Liberia
The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) is a peace-keeping force established in September 2003 under the U.N. Security Council Resolution 1497 to monitor a ceasefire agreement in Liberia. China announced in late 2003 that it would contribute 550 troops to the mission. China’s contribution to the mission include a 275-man engineer company, a 240-man transport company, and a field hospital of 43 medical staffs.
The peacekeeping force in Liberia encompasses four brigade sized formations, plus the force headquarters. Each formation is responsible for one of four sectors that the country has been divided into. The Chinese troops are stationed on the Sector 4 of the peacekeeping force, mainly responsible for repairing roads, bridges, airports, and buildings, as well as providing water supply, electricity, transport, and medical services for the peacekeeping force and local people.
