In 2007, the PLA introduced the Type 07 Combat & Training Uniforms to replace the older Type 87 Combat & Training Uniforms originally introduced in the 1980s. Each serviceman in the PLA has a Winter Combat & Training Uniform made of woollen material and a Summer Combat & Training Uniform made of cotton material. Both uniforms consist of a coat, trousers, a soft cap and black leather boots.
The summer combat uniform has a coat replacing the waist-length jacket used by the Type 87, with cuffed sleeves, a soft turndown collar, two zipper breast pockets, two hip pockets, and an arm pocket on the left sleeve. The rank insignia is worn on the collar. In summer period, enlisted personnel also wear a T-shirt (either in green or camouflage) for physical training. The winter combat uniform has an inner lining of quilted cotton padding brown fur collar, and a hood. A fur cap with earflaps is available for winter operations.
The Type 07 Combat & Training Uniforms are available in four basic camouflage patterns, all in the four-colour digital pattern:
- Woodland: Light green, dark green, brown, and black
- Desert: Tan, brown, dark brown, and black
- Urban: Grey, green, brown, and black
- Ocean: Light blue, blue, brown, and black
