The 41st Group Army (GA), headquartered in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, is one of the two group armies subordinated to the Guangzhou Military Region (MR). The unit is viewed as a strategic reserve ready to reinforce the Sino-Vietnam border, the southern coastal regions in Guangdong and Guangxi, and the central Hunna and Hubei Province.
The 41st GA was formed in 1985 on the basis of the PLA 41st Corps, which originally consisted of three infantry divisions (121st, 122nd, and 123rd). Upon its establishment, the group army received the 164th Infantry Division previously organic to the 55th Corps, a tank brigade, an artillery brigade and an AAA brigade. At the same time, the 122nd Infantry Division organic to the 41st Corps was disbanded.
In 1998, the 164th Motorised Infantry Division was transferred to the PLA Navy to form the 164th Marine Brigade. The tank brigade was reorganised into an armoured brigade.
