Last updated: 18 January 2008
The 16th Group Army (GA), headquartered in Changun City, Jilin Province, is one of the three group armies in the Shenyang Military Region (MR). The group army is composed of two motorised infantry divisions (46th and 69th), an armoured division (4th), and two motorised infantry brigades (48th and 68th). Its support units include an artillery brigade, an AAA brigade, a signal regiment and an engineer regiment.
The 16th GA was formed in 1985 on the basis of the PLA 16th Corps. The army has been deployed along the border with the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) since the late 1950s.
In 1992, the 10th Garrison Division of the group army was disbanded.
In 1998, the 47th Infantry Division was disbanded, and the 48th Infantry Division was downsized to a brigade. The 4th tank Division was reorganised into the 4th Armoured Division.
In 2003, following the disband of the 23rd GA, its 69th Motorised Infantry Division and 68th Motorised Infantry Brigade were reassigned to the 16th GA. The 10th Artillery Division of the 16th GA was downsized to a brigade. The anti-tank brigade originally organic to the 16th GA was deactivated to reserve force. |
