The 112th Mechanised Infantry Division was formed in 1948 as the 112th Division of the 38th Corps. The division took part in many important battles during the 1940s Chinese Civil War and the 1950s Korean War. As one of PLA's most elite units, the division has enjoyed higher priority in the resource allocation and training opportunities.

The 112th Division was initially an infantry division. In 1975, it became a "Motorised Infantry Division" (truck-mobile). In 1984, the division was reorganised into a "Mechanised Infantry Division" (APC-mobile. In the 1990s, the division was appointed one of the “rapid-reaction units” (RRU) in the PLA, ready to mobilise within 24~48 hours.

The division headquarters and its directly-subordinated elements are located in Gaobeidian, Hebei province. The division is composed of two mechanised infantry regiments: the 334th stationed in Zhuozhou and the 335th stationed in Yixian; an armoured regiment stationed in Baoding, an artillery regiment stationed in Laishui, and an AAA regiment stationed in Zhouzhou.

The armoured regiment of the 112th Division is equipped with the advanced Type 99 (ZTZ99) main battle tank (MBT) and Type 86 infantry fighting vehicles (IFV). The mechanised infantry regiments are equipped with the Type 89 (ZSD89) armoured personnel carrier (APC).
