Last updated: 4 February 2008
The PAP Gold Mine Troops (wujing huangjin budui) is a specialised branch of the Peoples’ Armed Police (PAP) Force, responsible for finding and safeguarding gold mines in the country. The Gold Mine Troops is manned by active duty military (PAP) personnel, but not directly involved in military operations. Gold Mine Troops are organised into a national command headquarters, three Gold Mine General Corps (huangjin zongdui), as well as educational and research institutes.
The PAP Gold Mine Troops can trace its lineage to the Gold Command Headquarters of the PLA Capital Construction Corps (jijian gongcheng bing huangji zhihui bu) formed in the 1970s, when the Chinese leaders decide to task the military with gold mine finding. In the late 1970s, the PLA Gold Command Headquarters was concurrently the Gold Administration under the PRC Ministry of Metallurgy, and the China National Gold Company. The PLA Capital Construction Corps was disbanded in the early 1980s, but the Gold Command Headquarters was retained and transferred to the PAP in 1984.
The PAP Gold Mine Troops units stationed across the country are directly managed by the Beijing-based PAP Gold Command Headquarters (wujing huangjin zhihuibu), which is subordinated to the PAP Headquarters. The PAP Gold Command Headquarters is composed of the Commander Department (siling bu), Political Department (zhengzhi bu), and Logistics Department (houqin bu). The headquarters is concurrently the head office of the China National Gold Group Corporation, a state-owned enterprise that responsible for China’s gold production. The major leaders of the PAP Gold Command Headquarters are also concurrently the managing directors of this company.
