SY-1 SHIP-TO-SHIP MISSILE
The ShangYou-1 (SY-1) is a Chinese copy of the Soviet P-15 (SS-N-2 Styx) anti-ship missile. The missile was developed by Nanchang Aircraft Factory (now Hongdu Aircraft Industry Group, HAIG) in the 1960s for the PLA Navy’s first-generation indigenous missile fast attack boats (Houku and Huangfeng class) and missile frigate (Type 053 Janghu class). The development began in the early 1960s with the first P-15 missile assembled using Soviet-made kits rolled out in 1964. The first test of the missile using Chinese-made parts took place in 1965. The missile received its design certificate in 1967 and entered service with the PLA Navy in the late 1960s.
The improved SY-1A with a mono-pulse terminal guidance radar replacing the original conical scanning radar was introduced in the 1970s, but the missile development did not complete until 1984. The Sy-1 series missile is generally obsolete and has been replaced by the more capable SY-2 introduced in the late 1980s. A land-based version has been developed but it did not enter service with the PLA Navy.
