Type 037-IS (Haiqing Class) Submarine Chaser

Type 037-IS (Haiqing Class)

The Type 037-IS (NATO reporting name: Haiqing class) is the modernised version of the Type 037 (Hainan Class) submarine chaser. A total of 20 hulls have been built by Shanghai-based Qiuxin Shipyard since 1993. The vessel was based on the hull design of the Type 037I, but with a redesigned superstructure and improved weapons and sensors. The displacement of the vessel was also increased to 478t.

The change of the Type 037-IS’s weapon configuration reflected a shift in the vessel’s role, from ASW to more general patrol and escort duties. The vessel uses two dual-37mm AAA guns replacing the problematic Type 66dual-57mm AAA guns on the original Type 037. Early variants of the Type 037IS was fitted with two Type 76 dual-37mm manual AAA guns (8.5km range), while later variants were fitted with two Type 76F dual-37mm automatic AAA guns. The original two Type 61 dual-25mm AAA guns were replaced by two 14.5mm anti-aircraft machine guns (AAMG). The four Type 62 five-tube AS rocket launchers on the bow deck were replaced by two improved Type 87 6-tube AS launchers, which features automatic reloading. An optronic director is located on top of the superstructure to be sued in conjunction with the Type 76F AAA guns.

So far 20 hulls have been built. These are: 613, 614, 632, 634, 651, 710~717, 743,744, 761~763, 786~792.
