In March 2007, the PLA Navy transferred two Type 053H (NATO codename: Jianghu Class) missile frigates to the China Coast Guard. After receiving some modifications, the two ships (Haijing 1002 and Haijing 1003) were commissioned in June/July 2007 for the coast patrol role.
Modifications on the two ships included the removal of the 100mm main gun on the bow deck and the two three-cell SY-1 anti-ship missile launchers in the mid-ship. The ships are fitted with a single-barrel 37mm gun on the bow deck, and two twin-14.5mm machine guns near the stern. There are also two water cannons located in front of the superstructure. Two high speed boats are carried at the stern of the ship.
