The Type 072-III (NATO reporting name: Yuting-II class) large landing ship is an improved variant of the Type 072-II (Yuting class) introduced in the 1990s. The Type 072-III has been built by the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in Shanghai, and the Dalian Shipyard in Dalian, Liaoning Province, with a total of ten hulls built between 2003 and 2005.

The Type 072-III is generally similar to the Type 072-II in size and capability, but features a redesigned fully concealed bridge replacing the original open-top bridge. A tunnel is provided underneath the bridge to allow troops move between the main deck and the stern helicopter deck. The ship carries one Type 76F dual-37mm AAA gun (manual or automatic, rate 180 rds/min; range 8.5km) on the bow deck, considerably less than the three dual-37mm guns on the Type 072-II. Additional air defence may be provided by man-portable air defence missile systems (MANPADS).

The ship has a full displacement of 4,800t, and is capable of carrying 10 tanks and 250 troops, or 500t cargo. There is a helicopter deck on the stern specious enough to support a Z-8-sized medium helicopter, but with no hanger. The ship has a destroyer-style bow with two side-hinged doors and a ramp for fast loading/unloading of troops and vehicles. The vehicle deck provides a large floor area and is accessed via the bow ramp. The docking bay, with doors at the stern of the ship, can be flooded for easy access by small air cushion landing craft or amphibious vehicles.

The ship is equipped with a surface search radar and a navigation radar. Its propulsion is provided by two diesels, giving a maximum speed of 17 knots.
