Description
The Fregat family of shipborne radar was designed for 3D, 360 degree/full-coverage surveillance and detection of airborne and surface target, as well as to provide target designation data for weapon systems and ECM suite. The radar is capable of performing effectively in intensive ECM environment. The radar could also be used in conjunction with a combat information system to form a C3I system. The radar has been deployed on a number of Soviet/Russian-made surface combatants.
The radar is available in a whole range of variants, intended for small corvettes to large destroyers and cruisers. The PRC obtained the radar together with the Project 956 Sovremenny class DDG in the late 1990s. 10 sets of the Fregat radar were reportedly imported from Russia, with two placed on the Type 052B DDGs in 2002 and two placed on the Type 051C DDGs in 2006. The first reverse-engineered Chinese copy (designated MP-710?) appeared on the Type 054A frigate in 2006.
