Description
The PLA Navy operates the Russian MR90 radar on the imported Project 956 Sovremenny class DDG (six radars) as well as the indigenous Type 052B Luyang class DDG (four radars) and Type 054A Jiangkai-II class FFG (four radars). The radar was designed to provide guidance for the 9M317 (SA-N-12) SAM and the indigenous HQ-16 SAM. Each radar can provide two channels, guiding two missiles simultaneously.
The PRC imported eight MR90s from Russia for four Project 956 DDGs in 2000. Two MR90 radars were tested for several years on the Chinese experimental ship Bisheng (hull No.891). The first installation of a Chinese copy of the MR90 supported the HQ-16 vertical launch system (VLS) on the Type 054A.
