The Type 77 was developed in the early 1970s for
the uses of artillery troops to tow artillery guns in the jungle and mountain regions in Southern China. The development began in January 1969, with
eight prototypes completed for tests by 1977. After a 12,000km field testing, the vehicle received its design certification
and was officially designated Type 77.
The vehicle is powered by a four-stroke V8-135 diesel
to provide 260 hp power. The engine compartment is located in the
front of the vehicle. A four-door forward driving cab can seat four
passengers (excluding diver). The cargo bed can be equipped with
an optional bench seat kit for transport of soldiers. These seats
can be folded down and stowed when not in use. The vehicle is also
equipped with a winch for recovery, and a heating device to help
engine start in cold weather.
