Type 60 Tracked Tractor

Development of the Type 60 tracked artillery tractor began in 1960, and the vehicle received its final design certification in 1961. Based on the design of the Type 63 APC, the Type 60 was mainly used for towing artillery guns of up to 15 tons weight. The vehicle is also available in various variants including mobile radar tractor and missile tractor.

In 1975 Luoyang Tractor Manufactory began to develop Type 60-I, an improved variant of the Type 60. The project completed in 1977 and the batch production began thereafter. Compared to the Type 60, the Type 60-I has many improvements including metallic tracks with rubber paddings, a modified transmission system, and a heating device to help the engine start in cold weather. The Type 60-I also has a better travelling capability in off-road conditions.

The vehicle mainly comprises three parts: front engine compartment, driving cab, and rear cargo body, which are based on a tracked chassis with five pairs of road-wheels similar to those on the 63 APC. The cargo body of the Type 60-I is also provided with a drop tailgate, and removable bows with canvas cover. The two-door driving cab can accommodate three crews (the Type 60-I can seat five). A roof hatch is available for observation as well as operating the 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine gun.

The vehicle is powered by a 4-stroke, liquid-cooled 12150L-1 diesel to provide 220 kW at 1600 r/min. The gearbox has five-forward and one reverse gears. Air compressor and tank are available to power the breaks on the towed trailer.
