SX2150 5 Tonne Truck
Last updated: 24 November 2006
In 1968, Xi’an-based Shaanxi Automobile Works (now Shaanxi Automobile Corporation Ltd) introduced the China’s first 6X6 cross-country military truck Yan’an SX250 based on the chassis design of the Soviet Ural-375 and the cab/cargo-bed designs of the French Berliet GBU 15. However, the batch production of the truck was delayed for six years due to poor reliability and other technical problems of the initial design. The modified SX250 entered batch production in 1974 and has been fielded by the PLA in significant numbers since then.
The SX250 was mostly seen serving with the PLA artillery troops for artillery gun hauling. It is also used as the chassis of several weapon systems including the Type 81 multiple rocket launcher (MRL) and HQ-61A surface-to-air missile system. The truck is also available in heavy equipment transporter (HET) tractor and workshop variants. In the early 1990s the truck was renamed Shaanqi SX2150 under the new motor vehicle designation system.
Currently there is still a large number of the SX2150 in the PLA service. These trucks are expected to be replaced by the new generation Shaanqi SX2150K and SX2190 in the future.
The SX2150 truck has a box-shape four-door driving cab that accommodates one driver and three passengers. The truck is powered by a Chinese indigenous liquid-cooled diesel with a five-speed gear box.
