The W03 large-calibre anti-material sniper rifle was first revealed in 2005. The weapon may have entered limited service with the PLA special operations forces (SOF). The bolt-action rifle uses a bullpup design, with the magazine hidden inside the butt stock. The rifle is available in two variants: the short-barrel (737mm) variant and long-barrel (1,002) variant.
The sniper rifle is fitted with an 8X optical scope, with no backup iron sight fitted. Alternatively, it can also be fitted with an electro-optical or night-vision sights. The barrel is free-floated. The rifle is mounted on a front-folded bipod with adjustable legs. A detachable rear monopod is fitted under the butt. The butt stock and pistol grip are made from wood.
The W03 sniper rifle can fire the standard Type 54 12.7mm heavy machine gun cartridge, or the newly developed 12.7mm sniper rifle cartridge. Higher firing accuracy is achieved by adopting a large V-shape muzzle break.
