The PLA introduced the novel Type 79 rocket hand grenade in 1979. Similar to a mini-panzerfaust in appearance, the hand grenade can be either thrown conventionally or fired using an attached rocket motor to a base range of 25m, or an indirect fire range of 400m. The grenade has a diameter of 45mm and weights 650g. The high explosive warhead produces over 320 prefabricated fragments, which scatter over 8m radius on detonation. The weapon is recoilless and virtually noise-free, making it particularly suitable for close combat.
