CF05 9mm Submachine Gun
Last updated: 12 February 2007
The Changfeng submachine gun was originally developed by Chongqing Changfeng Machine Manufacturing Ltd in the mid-1990s as a 5.8mm calibre compact weapon for the PLA. This weapon has been designed by the same people who previously designed the QSZ92 pistol. However, the weapon lost the bid for the PLA’s next generation submachine gun contract to the Jianshe Group QCW05 in 2001, partially due to its overly complicated design. Since then, Changfeng has developed the submachine gun into the CF05 9mm personal defence weapon (PDW) for police force and commercial export market.
The CF05 is blowback operated and uses 9 X 19mm cartridge. The weapon is fed from a helical 50-round magazine, which is on top of the receiver between the rear and fore sight and is similar in design to the magazine of the U.S.-made Calico submachine gun. On early prototypes there was also a second feed option in the form of a 15-round magazine similar to that of the QSZ92 pistol in the rear pistol grip. However, the dual-feed system was deemed overly complex and unnecessary. So on the production version the grip magazine was removed. On the later design the helical magazine was also made of transparent plastic so that the number of rounds left is clearly visible.
The submachine gun has an overall length of 405mm with the stock retracted and 598mm with the stock extended. It weighs 1.9kg loaded and has a rate of fire of 400 rounds-per-minute. The weapon is fitted with open sights, and has a mounting point for red dot or night sight just behind the rear sight block. The weapon has a retractable butt stock made of polymer, and can be fitted with a screw-on suppressor.
