Chinese Defence Today - Type 99 (W99) 82mm Automatic Mortar

NORINCO introduced its latest Type 99 (also known as W99) 82mm automatic mortar in 2000. The mortar, which is mounted on a two-wheel carriage, appears to be highly identical to the Russian 2B9 Vasilek 82mm automatic mortar. The most distinctive feature of the weapon is its ability to fire four 82mm mortar projectiles within 1.5 seconds in the burst firing mode. The projectiles are fed via a clip magazine each with 4 rounds from gun rear, or can be loaded from the muzzle in single round. The weapon is equipped with a computerised fire-control system for indirect or direct aiming. The weapon in the 4X4 lightweight vehicle-mounted form was seen in service with the PLA special operations forces (SOF).
