TYPE 89 60MM MORTAR
The PLA developed the Type 63 60mm mortars in the 1960s to provide indirect fire support for infantry companies. The improved Type 63-I was introduced in the early 1970s. The development of the new generation 60mm company mortar began in 1983, with the M83A 60mm mortar in 1986. The weapon took part in the border conflict with Vietnam in 1987. The designed was then modified according to the user feedbacks, which led to the introduction of the finalised design known as Type 89 (also known as PP89). However, the mortar is till inferior to the 60mm mortar designs in service with the Western armies.
